Workshop Safety

Inspection and Servicing

Inspection and Servicing

a vehicle workshop

Apprentices are taught first and foremost how to operate safely in a workshop environment, ensuring they understand the importance of protecting themselves and others. This includes learning how to correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE), identify and manage potential hazards, follow safe working procedures, and respond appropriately in the event of an emergency. They’ll also be introduced to workshop protocols such as safe tool handling, vehicle lifting techniques, and proper housekeeping to maintain a clean and organised workspace.

Inspection and Servicing

Vehicle safety inspections and routine servicing are essential skills, ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy and reliable. Apprentices learn to check key systems such as brakes, tyres, lights, steering, and suspension, identifying signs of wear or damage. They are trained to follow manufacturer schedules and accurately document their findings. By developing a methodical approach, apprentices are able to spot issues early, recommend necessary repairs or maintenance, and ensure all work complies with safety and legal standards.

Vehicle Systems

Inspection and Servicing

Routine Maintenance

vehicle chassis

A solid understanding of key vehicle systems is essential for apprentices, enabling them to see how components function both independently and in unison. Training covers systems such as suspension, steering, brakes, engines, fuel, exhaust, and electrical systems. Through a combination of hands-on experience and theoretical learning, apprentices gain the skills to diagnose faults, perform repairs, and replace components, all while adhering to industry standards.

Routine Maintenance

Tyre Repair and Fitting

Maintenance tasks beyond routine servicing are also an important focus, helping apprentices to develop a broader skillset. This includes jobs such as measuring and replacing worn brake components, fitting exhaust systems, and carrying out suspension repairs. These tasks often involve more detailed inspections, the use of specialist tools, and a strong understanding of manufacturer guidelines. Gaining confidence in these areas ensures apprentices can spot issues early and complete more complex repairs to a high standard.

Tyre Repair and Fitting

Tyre fitting

Tyre repair and fitting form an essential part of workshop training, covering everything from identifying damage to safely removing and replacing tyres using specialist equipment. Understanding tread depth, wear patterns, and legal requirements helps ensure vehicles remain safe and roadworthy. The process also includes wheel balancing and minor puncture repairs where suitable. In addition, apprentices gain hands-on experience with Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), learning how to identify faults, replace sensors, and reset the system to maintain optimal tyre performance and safety.

4-Wheel Alignment

4-wheel aligner

4-wheel alignment is a crucial part of vehicle maintenance, ensuring that all four wheels are properly aligned to the manufacturer’s specifications. Apprentices are taught how to use specialised equipment to measure wheel angles, such as camber, caster, and toe, and adjust them to improve handling, tyre wear, and overall vehicle performance. This training includes diagnosing alignment issues, understanding the impact of misalignment on safety and efficiency, and performing precise adjustments to restore optimal alignment, helping to extend the lifespan of tyres and enhance driving comfort.

High-Voltage Vehicle Isolation

High-Voltage Vehicle Isolation

High-Voltage Vehicle Isolation

high-voltage vehicle components

High-voltage isolation is an advanced skill set that apprentices are trained in to ensure safe working practices when handling electric and hybrid vehicles. This training covers the procedures for safely isolating high-voltage systems to prevent injury and ensure the safety of both the technician and the vehicle. Apprentices learn to identify high-voltage components, use the correct protective equipment, and follow strict protocols for isolation and de-energisation. In addition to the apprenticeship standard, apprentices also earn a Level 2 qualification in high-voltage isolation, ensuring they are fully equipped to work with the latest electric vehicle technologies in a safe and compliant manner.

Air Conditioning (F Gas)

High-Voltage Vehicle Isolation

Air conditioning systems are a critical part of vehicle comfort and apprentices are trained to handle the recovery, recharge and servicing of these systems. This includes diagnosing faults, safe handling of refrigerants, and replacing components such as compressors and condensers. Apprentices also receive the Level 3 F Gas certification, which qualifies them to work with refrigerants in compliance with industry regulations. Through hands-on training and theoretical knowledge, apprentices learn to safely handle air conditioning systems, ensuring vehicles maintain optimal climate control and operate efficiently.

Garage Operations

Apprentices also gain essential skills in the day-to-day operations of a garage, learning how to manage tasks that keep the business running smoothly. This includes interacting with customers, taking bookings, providing quotes, and addressing any concerns or queries. They are trained in ordering and managing parts, ensuring stock levels are maintained, and tracking deliveries. Apprentices also learn how to carry out stock taking, handle invoicing, and maintain accurate records. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient workflow, customer satisfaction, and the overall success of the garage.

PASTORAL CURRICULUM

GOING BEYOND THE JOB ROLE

Our pastoral curriculum is designed to support apprentices in becoming well-rounded individuals, equipping them with essential life skills beyond their role as technicians. It covers key areas such as managing money, maintaining health and mental wellbeing, staying safe online, and improving English and maths. Apprentices also develop digital skills, enabling them to navigate the modern workplace with confidence. By addressing these broader aspects of personal development, we ensure apprentices are prepared for success both in their careers and in everyday life.
